Michael Dyer: Music

12. Drastic'ly Drooping

(Michael Dyer)
I was listening to Crosby, Stills and Young's song "Helplessly Hoping". I really love the alliteration in that song ("Helplessly hoping her harlequin hovers ...") and also its 3-part harmonies, so I decided to try my hand at a song with lots of alliteration and some 3-part harmonies. I was also thinking about the fact that a good friend of mine was never able to have children. What resulted from these two threads of thought was this song. It's interesting that, although "Drastic'ly Drooping" was inspired by "Helplessly Hoping" it doesn't sound anything like that song.

DRASTIC'LY DROOPING

Drastic'ly drooping, her dahlias are dying alone,
Dry as a bone.
Sadly now stooping, her snapdragons squeezing on stones,
No moisture at home.
Limping, her lilacs are lacking the last of her love,
That once came from above.

How heavy the heart, when lovers so linked,
Must peel roots apart,
With hellish heart stains.
How hard to heal hopes,
When hopelessness rains.

Bitter, her bluebells are buried to badly to bloom,
Begging for room.
Knowing now never to need the nurs'ry again,
All flowers do bend.

Poorly, their petals keep trying to please and appease,
But can't ease the pain.

When loss lays claim,
Helplessness remains.
When driven insane,
Hopelessness rains.

Drastic'ly drooping, her dahlias are dying alone,
Dry as a bone.
Drastic'ly drooping her hopes for a child have flown.
She's lying alone.

She's lying alone,
Lying alone,
Lying,

Alone.
